Here is a brief time-line for my mother’s family in Shanghai between 1924 (Fay aged 0) and 1937 (aged 13).
- 1924, Arrive Shanghai International Settlement. Frederick Baker is Night Manager at the North China Daily News, later becomes printing manager at the Shanghai Times. Living in Yates Road, near Nanking Road.
- 1927. Living in Rue Pere Robert in French Concession, then Rue Boissesson.
- 1929. Living in Mrs Kalusak’s Hotel off Avenue Road, now Beijing Xi Lu.
- 1931, Cosgrove House. Fay attending Shanghai Muncipal School for girls, 70 Yu Yuen Road
- 1932 April. Japanese outside International Zone, Baker family starts 6-month round-the-world trip – ‘The Bakers Round’.
- 1933. At Yu Yuen Public School for girls, 404 Yu Yuen Road.
- 1934, Sept. School at Chefoo.
- 1935, Feb. Captured by pirates on way to Chefoo.
- 1937, August. Family had decided to return to UK, things all packed, and then had to evacuate with one suitcase when Japanese were fighting around the International Settlement. Arrived in UK October 1937
